Squirrels are the ultimate hoarders and they are the ultimate opportunists. On top of that, they constantly work to acquire as much as possible: cat food, dog food, nuts, pinecones, jewelry, paper, ribbons, caps, pull tabs, money, fabrics, fibers, fur, rocks, and anything else that will fit inside their homes. Squirrels make human pack rats look like amateurs.

At this time, I have yet to hear of a way to set up a completely "Squirrel Proof" bird feeder, without causing harm to the squirrels (we consider harming squirrels an unacceptable means of squirrel control -- however, we live in a...cough...democracy and must respect the decisions of others no matter how offensive they may be to us [the decisions -- not the people...well, ok...sometimes the people, but that's not the case here.])
