You were lucky. Not everyone escapes the squirrel mobs unscathed. If you had made any move towards harming any of the squirrels, all hell would have broken loose. Good job!

Squirrel mobs usually only form when a fellow squirrel is mistreated or abused by a human. Most of the mob participants originally gather in order to form a peaceful protest, however there are always a few squirrels that show up intoxicated on Peanut Oil* who always manage to get the crowd riled up. This usually leads to nut throwing, clawing, biting, and the exchange of harsh words.

If anyone ever comes across a squirrel mob, turn around and walk the other way -- it'll be best for both parties.

In regards to the lone squirrel you witnessed who made it possible for you to escape unharmed, more than likely it was the victim of the initial incident of abuse trying to keep the mob from hurting an innocent person.
